Labiaplasty

BOOK NOW

Labiaplasty is an excellent option for patients who want to change the size and appearance of the labia. Reasons for a labiaplasty can range from resolving physical discomfort to achieving cosmetic and aesthetic goals. Excess labial tissue can cause discomfort for many patients during exercise and other physical activities, and can also make it difficult to wear certain clothes. It can also make it more difficult to maintain hygiene, increasing the risk of infections. A labiaplasty can also address cosmetic concerns, such as asymmetry and excess of the labia minora, excessive clitoral hooding, and loss of volume or excess of the labid majora. During a consultation with Dr. Aya-ay, patients can determine whether a labiaplasty is the option best suited to their needs.

What is a Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a procedure to change the size, shape and symmetry of the patient’s labia or the folds of mucosa and skin around the vaginal opening. An enlarged labia can be a result of several circumstances, including puberty, menopause or hormonal changes, significant changes in weight, pregnancy and childbirth, and genetics. Depending on the patient’s aesthetic/cosmetic goals and the type of procedure they are receiving, several techniques can be utilized. Tissue may be removed from the labia minora with a trim excision or wedge technique. The clitoral hood can be reduced and direct excision and/or fat grafting can be performed to the labia majora.  Your surgery will be customized to your specific anatomy and goals.

Labiaplasty Procedure

During this procedure, either local (intravenous) or general anesthetic will be administered. These procedures can be performed in the office or in the surgery center/hospital operating room based on the patient’s preference and procedure.  If the patient is undergoing a reduction procedure, two different techniques can be used. The “trim” procedure involves the removal of excess tissue from the edge of the labia minora so that they align evenly with the edge of the labia majora. The “wedge” procedure involves the removal of a wedge-shaped area of tissue in the inner region of the labia minora.  The technique will be chosen based on your anatomy.  Excision of redundant mucosa of the clitoral hood can be conservatively excised as well.

If the patient is undergoing a volume replacement procedure, a small amount of fat will be taken from elsewhere on the body and injected into the labia majora.  If there is excess redundant skin in the labia majora this can be directly excised. All of these procedures typically take less than two hours to complete.

Labiaplasty Recovery and Aftercare

The labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure, meaning patients can typically return home on the day of the surgery. Pain medication and antibiotic will be given.  Limitations on activity for a period of time should be expected in order to reduce the risk of postoperative complications. Dr. Aya-ay and her staff will review the postoperative instructions with you at your consultation and again at your preoperative visit to ensure that you are comfortable with your postoperative care.

We Love
Our Patients

“Dr. Melanie Aya-ay you inspire me. You gave me my femininity and self-esteem when I had none. You gave me courage when I felt weak. You are truly more than a Dr. I will forever be grateful to you. I will remember when I was lashing out and told you I had changed my mind about the mastectomy and having reconstruction. You gave me back my power by simply stating “Do what you want”. You gave me permission to choose with that choice I felt strength. Thank you will never be enough for you.”
